Bird of Paradise

The bird of paradise is a true statement plant! Their large, glossy leaves add an instant tropical feel to indoor spaces. They get their name from their flowers that look like a bird’s head.

Light: The Bird of Paradise requires lot of bright, indirect light, and will be happiest if placed in a location that receives a minimum of 6 hours of bright, indirect light.

Water: Wait until the top 2 inches of soil is dry, and then when it’s time to water, saturate the plant.

Soil: Bird of paradise prefers a loose, well-draining soil. Tropical soil with added perlite or orchid bark is a good choice.

Fertilizer: During active growth give your bird a ½ strength liquid houseplant fertilizer every other week. Alternatively you can mix a slow release fertilizer into the top few inches of soil in the spring. Giving some extra nutrients will help the bird grow to its full potential.

Growth: This is a fast-growing plant that may reach the ceiling! You will see about 2’ of growth per year when this plant is happy.

Pet Friendly? Toxic to fur babies ☹

*Splits sometimes form in the leaves of the Bird of Paradise. In nature this happens to help the plant sustain high winds. The splits sometimes appear randomly in homegrown plants as well, but they are completely normal and nothing to be concerned about.*
